Splitting a Pallet In Half

This example explains two ways to combine different box types on a pallet: mixing them or splitting full pallets and combining.
The first step is to run Quick Pallet Maker and open a new window for calculating boxes on pallets. This can be done by using the File - New Data Sheet - Box on Pallet command. We will be using inches and lbs as the units. They can be changed in the Settings window, from the Tools menu, or by right-clicking the bottom-right corner of the Window and selecting inches/lbs.

The next step is to enter the dimensions of the boxes that we will calculate. For convenience, they can be copied and pasted from the linked spreadsheet. The box dimensions are:
  • 29x18x23 inches, 53 lbs weight
  • 17x17x20 inches, 24 lbs weight
We will use the CHEP 48x40 pallet with a maximum load height of 70 inches.

Once that has been set, we use the Tools - Recalculate command.

This should produce a list of 6 pallets, 3 per box type. One pallet will place the boxes lengthwise, the other one with the boxes placed transversally, and the last one with an optimized combination of the two.

We will select the last pallet of the list to view the result.

Next, we will select the third pallet (dark green boxes, with optimized layout) and use the Edit - Duplicate menu command once.

We select the pallet numbered 6 in the results and we use the Edit - Duplicate command twice to produce two copies. Now, we can select the three new pallets (one dark green and two light green) and use the Mix Pallet command.

This will produce a new mixed pallet that uses the first layer of the previously selected pallets.

Another simple way to calculate mixed pallets is to assign an amount to the boxes and then use the Tools - Calculate Box Shipment command. The stacking menu may produce better or worse outcomes based on the order of the boxes on the pallet.

This will produce mixed pallets.

If the amount of boxes are the same as the original calculation, then the correct mixed pallet can be produced.
